Netherlands didn't create any clear cut chances in the first half. However, they did manage to mark Messi particularly well. The Dutch were again trying to play a possessive style of football. Robben missed out on a brilliant opportunity to score however, it was well blocked by the Argentine defender. The period of extra time was similar to the 90 minutes as both sides struggled it out to put the ball at the back of the net. Tim Krul wasn't substituted in for the penalties which should have been done and Sneijder and Vlaar missed their penalties as the Dutch bowed out and will now play for the 3rd place against Brazil

Argentina were marginally the better side in the first half. Lavezzi made a couple of good runs to trouble the Dutch defense, however, they seemed to lack the presence of Di Maria, as it was a hard fought midfield battle in the first half. The Argentine's substituted all their attacking options to try and inject some pace into the game, yet they didn't get through the Dutch defense as the match was pushed into extra time. Argentina had a brilliant chance to take the lead however, Palacio failed to head the ball in, in a one on one with the Goalkeeper. The Argentines however, converted all their penalties as they qualified for the finals against Germany.
