If anything, Germany was looking at a very humiliating draw which would have thrown the country’s World Cup campaign out in the open as the outcome of the penalties could not have been predicted. But we witnessed that was going to happen. Andre Schurrle , the super sub came on in the 45th minute for an underperforming Mario Gotze.
Germany, despite their good possession, was frustrated by the Algerian defense as they managed to clear every ball that came into the box. Schurrle coming in strengthened the German offense as they put more shots on target in the second half with the man himself attempting quite a few.
The Chelsea midfielder found the back of the net with a slick finish two minutes into the first half of extra time courtesy to a Muller assist. The largely frustrated German fans erupted with joy at their late success.
Apart from Schurrle, the Algerians need more than a mention as they held their defense together spectacularly against the barraging attack of the Germans particularly the likes of Muller and Schurrle. They lost the game but clearly won many hearts.
Here’s an overview of the substitute’s performance.
Shots: 7
Shots on Target: 4
Passes: 21

Schurrle’s side Germany will next face France in a tight fixture for a spot in the Quarter Finals.
