Captain van Persie and Arjen Robben have been formidable throughout this tournament, but it now looks like van Persie might be out since he has been struggling with intestinal injuries. This pitches the aggressive Robben against the tactical Messi. Robben has scored wonderful goals against France and Australia, and assisted a goal against Chile. The team has been relatively consistent and have not had to struggle too much to ensure their victory. He 30-year old was able to fight against teams like Australia and Chile that put up a surprisingly hard fight. He has been a force to reckon with. He scored one of the fastest goals in the world ever against Australia as well. His immense speed and tackling abilities are what will help him break through Argentinian defence. Like any other forward, he thrives in the company of a winger or two to provide insurance to his goals/goal attempts, but he has shown the ability to play very well while going solo as well.
Memphis Depay is a young Dutchman who has shone this tournament. Only 20, he has already scored two goals in his first ever World Cup an assisted one of Robben’s goals against Australia. Currently playing as left wnger for his national team and midfielder as well as club PSV Eindhoven, he has shown remarkable versatility and ha covered considerable ground this world cup. He, too, seems to play well with veteran Robben and together, it can be guaranteed that the two will score a goal if they have the ball between them. His short passes have been accurate and he demonstrates considerable talent for a player so young.
Van Persie being out of the tournament might not have as adverse an effect for the able team as Neymar’s absence did to Brazil. In a team that well-knit and with young talent shining brightly, Netherlands might just secure a ticket to the finals.
