Only twenty-one and the first goal-scorer for national team Costa Rica, Joel Campbell has been showing a lot of skill and promise. He plays as the forward or winger for his national team and has spent time on loan with both Spanish club Real Betis as well as Greek club Olympiakos while waiting for the visa clearance that will secure his spot with Arsenal.
The young player excels in successful long passes and smart assists. In a tournament that features some of the biggest names in football and against a relatively strong team such as Uruguay, Campbell performed exceedingly well, making his presence strongly felt across the length of the pitch. He assisted Urena’s goal, the third for Costa Rica by cutting through the Uruguay defence from the far side and sending it Urena’s way, who was quick to use the chance given t him so score a goal.
It’s refreshing to watch a relatively new player shine so well at his very first World Cup. Maybe he got lucky since Suarez did not open for Uruguay and came in too late into the game. The young winger does face a team as strong as Italy who defeated England in their previous encounter. Their defences are definitely stronger than Uruguay’s and if Campbell is able to break past the likes of Pirlo, he coule be looking at potential goals in tonight’s match and maybe, just maybe, even a win. The expected underdogs have risen by leaps and bounds this World Cup, after all.
