Air India colts are Super champs, Mumbai FC U-19 finish second
Mumbai: Air India Under-19 were crowned Super Division champions of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2014-15. The Air India colts completed their playoff matches, with 11 points and a healthy goal-differential of plus 13, to finish in pole position.
Mumbai FC Under-19, with 8 points before their final game, were also in contention for the title, but faced a difficult task of defeating Mumbai Warriors by a near impossible 14 clear goals to finish ahead of Air India. The Mumbai FC colts could only manage a 2-1 win against Mumbai Warriors at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel, on Sunday evening. They had to settle for the runners-up spot.
However, since both Air India Under-19 and Mumbai FC Under-19, who are already represented by their senior teams in the Elite Division will not earn promotion. The MDFA has also decided that in such a situation no other Super Division team will be promoted to the Elite Division next season.
Earlier, Income Tax recorded a 7-3 win against Juhu Sparks to tally 10 points and clinch the third place. For Income Tax striker Prathamesh Parwal scored a brace, while Madan Takalikar, Camilo Noronha, Lokhendra Swar, Santosh Shinde and Raj Trivedi chipped in with one each. The Juhu side scored their goals through Mahesh Kotkar, Robert Kunnel and Zico Gonsalves.
The Air India youngsters received the Super Division Trophy and a cash award of Rs 60,000, while Mumbai FC received the runners-up trophy and a purse of Rs 40,000. Income Tax got the third place prize money of Rs 20,000.
Mumbai FC’s attacking striker and consistent scorer Prince Anandraj, who also scored both the goals in his club’s win against Warriors, was declared the ‘player of the tournament’ and was presented with a cash award of Rs 5,000.
