Liverpool played out an exciting draw against Arsenal at Anfield which saw them surge into the top of the table but this season has been absolute shambles for Brendan Rodgers side, who finished runners up to Manchester City last season.
Loss of Luis Suarez and injuries to Daniel Sturridge and other key players, along with failure of new signings to perform has made Liverpool slumber in the bottom half of the table. Liverpool had a difficult November-December where they faced all the top sides barring Manchester City. They gained only a solitary point from possible 9 points in three games against United, Chelsea and Arsenal.
But now all the Premier League clubs head into the busy Xmas period and Liverpool can look to capitalize on this as they have a kinder fixture list than they had till now. Rodgers is confident about his side challenging for a top four spot despite being nine points behind the fourth placed West Ham United.
Rodgers said: "Can we now challenge for the top four? Yes. Absolutely. The most important thing is that we are moving in the right direction again."
It seems a draw against Arsenal has spurred on the Liverpool gaffer, but only time will tell whether they indeed finish in top four or the season of mediocrity will continue at Anfield.
