World Cup 2014 witnesses it's first stalemate
The second fixture of Group F between Iran and Nigeria was all set for kickoff at the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba. Despite Nigeria playing a younger side, with all the dressing room controversies brewing at the Iran camp, Nigeria were bound to be favourites to win this match. On the other hand, Iran has a good defence and would look to sneak a goal on the counter. Nigeria played an attacking 4-3-3 formation while Iran went with a speculative 4-5-1.
First Half: 0-0As expected, Iran were defending very deep right from the start of the game. Nigeria, in the meanwhile seemed to be easing their way into the game trying to make inroads using the pace of Victor Moses. The Iranian keeper, Alireza Haghighi wasn't helping their cause by making some school boy errors. Towards, the end of the first half, both teams tried to show some urgency in their gameplay, however in vain. Nevertheless, Nigeria had the better chances while Iran seemed to have a more balanced shape thanks to their coach, Carlos Queiroz.
Second Half:0-0The second half seemed to be a blatant continuation of the first with both sides seeming to be content with a draw. However, Nigerian coach, Stephen Keshi decided to inject some tempo into the game by rightfully bringing on Shola Ameobi. Despite making some good runs via Ameobi, the Nigerians seemed to be lacking quality in the final third. On the other hand, Iran maintained their shape which started frustrating the Nigerian players and fans alike. After Ameobi, it was Peter Odemwingie's chance to try and provide the elusive goal, however, Iran seemed to successfully hold back any attempts on goal. With just 5 minutes left for Injury time, the Nigerians tried their best to shatter the Iranian defence, pressing forward, however, they simply seemed to lack the quality. The game ended in a stalemate.
This was the first draw of World Cup 2014. With Argentina favourites to top the group and Bosnia seemingly the better of the remaining three, it was crucial for both teams to secure a win. The match ending in a draw was the worst possible result for both sides.
