lthough the game between England and Costa Rica ended a goalless draw, the excitement was not missing – at least in the second half. With Costa Rica playing a more defensive game it was evident that the keeper would have to be up to the job. Aged 27 and playing for Levante, the Costa Rican No.1 has been first choice for his country since 2008. Starting his club career with Deportivo Saprissa, he has won 7 titles with the team and been first choice for them in goal consistently. Individually he has also won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009.
Gameplay:
England did most of the asking from Costa Rica during the final fixture of the Group of Death. Sturridge attempted some long shots which were tipped out by Navas. He read the game very well and came out of goal boldly to intercept through balls which would have otherwise been dangerous. Although his defense let him down a few times, he stood like a wall in front of goal. Although statistics will say that only 1 save was made, it was apparent that the keeper had a strong effect on the backline by reading into the English attack and stopping the possible half-chances.
Statistics:
Passes Completed – 13
Saves – 1
Throughout the match he could be seen marshalling the backline and instructing his defenders. Another interesting statistic was that England had 7 corners, most of which were in the second half. All the corners were cleared effectively by the defense or caught by Navas who seemed in exceptional form.
This keeper is one player to look out for in the knockout stages and may be the difference between winning and losing for Costa Rica.
