Joachim Loew’s squad will be heading into their opening game of the tournament as one of the favorites to win the trophy. The Germans have a formidable record in the World Cup having lost only one of their last 18 group matches while the Portugese led by manager Paulo Bento have won only one in their last seven games. The Germans will be optimistic about finishing at the top of their group considering that they have one of the most complete squads filled with veterans and youngsters alike. The Portuguese, though, are dependent on performances of a few key players like Cristiano Ronaldo, William Carvalho and the beast Pepe.

Players to look out for:

Cristiano Ronaldo has declared himself fit to start. As Portugal’s captain and their most valuable player he will play a crucial role in his country’s fortunes. William Carvalho, the youngster has already been the subject of talk for some top European clubs and will be key to his team’s defense. Among the Germans, Thomas Mueller, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos and youngster Mario Gotze will hold their midfield together. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer having had his worst Champions League campaign will look to bounce back for his country. Phillip Lahm had flourished in his midfield role for Bayern, so new found ability will be another aspect to take away from this game.

Teams head-to-head:

The two teams have a total of 17 games between them of which Germany have won 9 and Portugal 3, remaining 5 games have ended in draws.

Prediction:

Germany’s squad is pretty much the dream squad and their play will be a treat to watch, they are likely to win unless Ronaldo pulls off his spectacular match winning performances. The Germans will steal three points from their European foes.

Final Score Prediction: Germany 3-2 Portugal

Match timings: 9:30 Pm IST.
