Oinam Bembem Devi – A name that goes hand in hand with Indian Women’s football has announced her retirement. The Manipur Born Midfielder has represented India for an unbelievable 20 years. She player her first match for India back in 1995 when she was just 15 years old. Known for her skills and her speed, the Central Midfielder has been a part of the national side which won the South Asian games in 2010 and the SAFF Women’s Championship in 2012.
The talented player can be also defined as a prolific goal scorer as she has scored 11 times for the national side in just 18 appearances. The Lionel Messi fan wore the captain’s armband thrice in 2003, 2010 and 2012.
“Today is the last day of 2015, I hereby officially announce my retirement from football. I have been lucky enough to have had a wonderful career representing my country for 20 years and the State team for 24 years.” Bembem said.
"Upcoming AIFF 21st Senior Women’s National will be the last tournament I would play for the state team. It's been an incredible journey and I enjoyed every moment of playing. I want to thank my family and friends, for all the support and love they gave me over my career. I really couldn't have done this without them. I love you all and thank you very much.” She added.
The star player has been a part of Manipur state team which has won 17 of 20 national football tournaments so far. She has been a part of their setup for the last 24 years.
Bembem’s performances for India and Manipur did not go unnoticed as she was called by Maldives side New Radiant in 2014 to represent them in their league. She ended the league as the top scorer, netting 6 times in just 3 appearances.
An inspiration to many, her retirement came as a blow for Indian womens national football team. Fulham Ladies FC player Tanvie Hans voiced her appreciation for the Manipur born Indian legend on Facebook:
“She is a true hero and has an amazing legacy to show for it! I've always wanted to play with her at least once, so her announcement truly saddens me, but I hope to meet her some day just to say 'thank you'. Thank you for your limitless contribution to Indian Women's football. You are a legend!”
The 35 year old is the only player to win the women’s player of the year award twice in 2001 and 2013. She was also the first recipient of the award back in 2001.Jersey No.6 will always be synonymous with Bembem Devi’s name in Indian Women’s football.
