Will Roman’s financial woes stop Messi’s switch to Chelsea?

Much has been written about Lionel Messi and his proposed move to Chelsea. Some report that the Argentine prefers a switch to London if he at all moves to Premier League with Manchester clubs in the tow.

But with FFP in place is it realistically possible for any other club than United to go all out for Messi? Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich has periodically invested in in the club with the total amount totaling around a billion pounds since 2003. With economic slowdown and stagnation in crude oil market, can Abramovich really afford to pump in almost 200 million on a single player?

Despite his personal wealth eroding, the Russian oligarch has invested in club time and again. This season too he invested around 75 million pounds in transfers. It should be noted that, most of the money was raised from player sales. This underlines the fact that Roman may be distance himself from splurging on Messi as it is detrimental to both club and his personal finances.

Whatever happens, it is going to be an interesting summer with one of the best players in the world reportedly is looking for a change in scenery.
