Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph killed Steven Gerrard’s Wembley dream as Aston Villa ousted Liverpool out of FA to book a finals date with defending champions Arsenal. Phillipe Coutinho scored for the Reds but in vain.
Liverpool took lead in 30th minute thanks to fine finish from the Brazilian who slid the ball past the Villa keeper. The goal completely changed the tide of the game as Aston Villa started to hound Liverpool from then on. And they finally achieved success as Christian Benteke leveled for them in 36th minute. The Belgian leapt in air to head the ball home after meeting the cross from Villa’s teenage sensation Jack Grealish.
The Irishman was the star of the day for the Midlands club and he along with Fabian Delph was pivotal for Villa in this huge victory. Delph rose to the occasion as he scored a super winner in the 54th minute. He fired a low shot from the penalty box to beat Simon Mignolet and Liverpool.
Mario Balotelli was wrongly adjudged offside after he equalized for the Merseyside club in the 81st minute. Despite all this, Tim Sherwood’s boys deserved this win as they played with never say never spirit.
Steven Gerrard’s last Wembley appearance won’t be a memorable one but not every tale has a fairytale ending.
