Former England captain has backed his former teammate to succeed as the Three Lions captain and believes that the talismanic striker has got what it takes to lead his national team. Beckham said:
"He’s one of the most experienced players in the team now."
"Wayne will get the best out of the players, he has always played with his heart on his sleeve."
Drawing a comparison with his tenure as English captain he went on to add,
"He will work hard, play hard, that's the way he is and he will lead by example. I never hid as captain and Wayne has never hidden either, even when he has had difficult times on the pitch by not scoring or not had a great game."
The 39 year old added that Wayne Rooney has the right attributes to lift up the side when needed and is a passionate individual which is a must for a captain.
“You realise you have a real
responsibility on and off the field. You
have to lead by example.
“You will never see him not working.
That will be one of his strongest
qualities."
He also asked patience from both fans and media on Rooney as the Manchester United captain should be allowed to settle in his new found role.
Beckham said,
"I made mistakes when I was captain of the country and did silly things but I grew into it and it made me more mature."
He was further probed whether he'll join the English side this term in the dugout alongside Roy Hodgson he was quick to deny it. Although he was ready to join in with the national squad if and when required,
“No I haven’t [been asked],” he added. “I only retired just over a year ago and
obviously I’ve been busy with stuff I’ve
been doing but, if I can help in any way for the future of England and the future of English football, I will."
The Superstar footballer was acting coy on being involved as coach in later stages of his life.
“You never know; it has never really crossed my mind,” he said. “If I was to do it in the future, I would do it in the right way. Like Scholesy, Giggsy, Butty, Gary, Phil. That’s the way you have to do it. I have no plans to do it in the next 10 years.”
