A 43 year old Deportivo fan died as fans clashed outside Atleti’s stadium, Vincente Calderon, before their sides La Liga clash.

A dozen of fans clashed outside and a fan who sustained severe head injuries fell down in the Manzanares river, which runs besides the Calderon. The fan was shipped out at around 2 pm local time but was declared dead as he reached hospital.

Atleti Defender Diego Godin told Spanish TV that he was ashamed by the incident and said that the supporters of both teams have been let down by a small minority.

He said: "This curse must be eradicated from football. The Atletico and Deportivo fans do not deserve to have their image damaged by a few."

The game was supposed to be called off but the clubs could not contact the FA in time and the game proceeded as scheduled. Atleti won the tie 2-0 despite these tussles.
