EPL Flopped Transfers

Aug 06, 2014 15:31

Every now and then comes along a major star, heavily priced who looks like a promising signing but fails to deliver. The transfer process can be a gamble sometimes when injured players are bought, players who have performed well only in a single season, inconsistent players or when a player shifts leagues he just cannot keep up with the style. Here is a look at our top 5 failed transfers in the Premier League in the recent past.

1.Fernando Torres

Our very obvious choice in this list is the Chelsea No.9. Coming in for a whopping £ 50Million to Stamford Bridge in January 2011, he was expected to take the Blues to new heights and be the leading goal-scorer as a replacement for the ageing Didier Drogba. Ancelotti and Abramovic put a lot of faith in him, but he failed miserabley to deliver netting only 1 goal in his first 6 months. After hi glorious days at Athletico Madrid and Liverpool, he has been a complete flop with the Blues. His career statistics with his current clubs how a mere 45 goals in 172 appearances bringing down his value to less than £ 20 million. No doubt he has tried hard showing hard work in the field, but he has ended up missing the most easy chances.

2.Andy Caroll

Another Premier League striker in this list is the Englishman Andy Caroll. After a £ 35 Million move to Liverpool in January 2011, he was expected to fill in the shoes of Fernando Torres who had an excellent spell at Annfield and had left for Chelsea. However, after a poor starting season and showing no improvement, the Reds had to loan him out and finally let him go. His market value is as low at £ 14 Million now. He has scored 29 goals in 124 appearances in the Premier League with various clubs and in all likeliness has lost the spark.

3.Alberto Aquilani

Currently playing in the Serie A with Fiorentina, he had moved from Roma to Liverpool in 2009 for a fee of £ 20 Million. Great expectations were bestowed on him, however, after scoring just 2 goals in 28 games, he never managed to get a grip on the English game. Part of this was to blame on a series of injuries suffered by him and after being loaned to Juventus and Milan, he was finally sold to his current club.

4.Andriy Shevchenko

After being included in Pele’s selection of 125 greatest footballers (living), he was seen as a rising star by Sir Alex Ferguson and bought for £ 28.1 Million. He was best known for his quick through balls and opportunities created. However, he failed to impress on English soil and after a stint at Chelsea, was no longer considered as a great footballer.

5.Robinho

The Brazilian moved to Manchester City in 2008 for a then record fee of £ 32 Million. But much like the other big players he could not settle at the Ethiad at after a cople of loaned out seasons, was sold to AC Milan.
