Gerrard farewell turns into disaster at Stoke
?
Liverpool lost 6 -1 and failed to make up for the loss at Anfield last week as they were unable to give Steven Gerrard a winning send off. Liverpool suffered their biggest ever Premier League loss and their worst since a 7-2 loss to Tottenham in April 1963. Liverpool fans were angry as The Reds were down 5-0 at half time. Liverpool conceded 5 goals in the span of 23 minutes.
“We are embarrassed and the supporters deserve an apology,” said Rodgers.
“The supporters have every right to be angry. They have been brilliant for us so we can have no complaints. The fans were angry at half-time and rightly so because that was awful.” He added.
"I accept that there will be questions about my future,” Rodgers further said. “I’ve always said if the owners want me to go I go. I still feel I have a lot to offer. There is an awful lot of work to do and our job is to go to fix that. My pride makes me want to be in this job. I love the job and I love the club.”
Gerrard has managed to rack up 186 goals for 707 appearances for Liverpool in all matches so far, scoring his last goal in this game against Stoke. Gerrard who is headed to MLS side LA galaxy has played 17 years for Liverpool, in the top flight, since making his debut in 1998. Gerrard has won 10 titles during his spell at Liverpool.
A defeat this humiliating diverts the attention to a bigger question, Is Brendan Rodgers the right man to lead Liverpool next season? This is a question which has been asked by fans and pundits repeatedly. Rodgers certainly believes that he is the right man for the job but a 6 -1 defeat to Stoke City is certainly unacceptable.
