Diego Costa has been in the eye of storm after having a stomping fest at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard drew criticism from all quarters in the media and the footballing fraternity but one guy stood by him. None other than his gaffer, Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese has defended his striker by saying that his player was only vying for ball and there was no intention or malice behind those challenges.
‘He goes to the ball, he chases it, the opponent goes to the floor and he puts his foot there when he is looking at the ball.’
This is in retaliation to his Liverpool counterpart Brendan Rodgers’ comments who said that he could have easily hurdled over the player.
"He could easily hurdle over the young player and he directs his studs right on to his ankle, which could've been nasty," said the Reds boss.
"Again, the one with Martin Skrtel, there's no need to do it. That's the sad thing. He's a top-class player and he's clever enough that the officials don't see it."
Mou grew even stronger in his player’s defence as he added that there is a ‘campaign against him and Chelsea in the media by a TV pundit.
‘I don't know what you understand by a stomp,’ he said. ‘Maybe you are already influenced by the campaign on the television with certain pundits saying Costa has committed a crime — the guy who says that must be nuts.
‘It is a great campaign. We know how much that pundit loves Chelsea. You are a manager, on the bench, and these guys have a good seat, earning a lot of money, no pressure.
‘They are never wrong, they have to be fair and they have to be honest.’
The guy in question is believed to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, who is a long standing critic of Mourinho.
