In football there are some moves which pay off big time and some moves just fall flat. WE at TFM are having a look at such moves which seemed top draw moves but later on turned out to be a damp squib.
1. Denilson – Sao Paolo to Real Betis(£21.5m)
It is one of the worst moves ever to take place in the world of football. Reqal Betis broke transfer record for the Brazilian midfielder, which shocked one and every one. Blame it on the record fee or the timing of the transfer, lady luck didn’t seemed too happy with this Brazilian.
2. Fernando Torres – Liverpool to Chelsea (£50m)
A supposed Cinderella story which went the ‘Wrong Turn’ way. An in form and on fire Fernando Torres became a laughing stock in his Chelsea days.
3. Juan Sebastian Veron - Lazio to Manchester United (£29.5m)
One of the best midfielders ever to grace the game is much maligned for his disastrous spell in England than for his heroics elsewhere. He was signed for a record fee at that time but the he was a flop as he couldn't adapt to Premier League.
4. Andy Caroll – Newcastle United to Liverpool (£35m)
A English player who is in red hot form moves to one of the iconic club in England. A dream move for any one, but a nightmare for Andy as he just couldn’t settle into life at Anfield thanks to consistent injuries.
5. Robbie Keane – Coventry City to Inter Milan (£13m)
Marcello Lippi paid that amount of money for a teenager who was barely making outa name for himself in England. He could not establish himself at Inter which saw him return to England within six months.
6. Zlatan Ibrahimovic - AC Milan to Barcelona (£42.5m + Samuel Eto’o)
He was a succews on pitch at Camp Nou but a failure off it. His differences with Pep Guardiola are well renowned. He blamed Pep for killing his ‘dream’ to play for Barca.
7. Johnathan Woodgate – Newcastle to Real Madrid (£13.4m)
Madrid daily Marca declared this as the worst signing of 21st Century. Need we say more?
8. Adrain Mutu – Parma to Chelsea (£15.8m)
If not for his cocaine antics, Adrain Mutu would have been a legend at Chelsea. Sadly, he ruined his footballing career for his addiction.
9. Diego Forlan - Independiente to Manchester United (£6.9m)
He was bought as fiture superstar by Sir Alex Fergusson but he turned out be a flop at Old Trafford. He was nicknamed ‘Forlorn’ by United fans for his mediocre spell in Manchester.
10. Andriy Shevchenko – AC Milan to Chelsea (£29.5m)
Jose Mourinho signed high flying Ukrainian from Milan for a British record fee but the striker failed to live up to his expectations.
