10 Things You Did Not Know About Shamrock Rovers

Jan 31, 2016 16:35

Did you know Shamrock Rovers are the most successful side in Ireland? Or that they were without a home for more than 2 Decades? Or that they provide Ireland with more players than any other club? Intrigued? Let’s dig deeper. Did you know…

1.That the Club is more than a century old…?

The Club was founded in 1901 however, there is a dispute regarding this as certain fan sections believe that the club was founded in 1942. The earliest record of the club was in an article of 1901. The club has been disbanded, reformed, revamped over the course of the century but it was all for the good as it all led to them being the most successful side.

Well… This is definitely a controversial topic!

2.That Bob Fullam is a club legend

Bob Fullam managed to score 27 goals in 18 appearances for the Irish side in 1922-23 season. He managed to score 27 of the total 77 goals scored. It was Shamrock’s first title and the club won the league with the help of the forward with a margin of 5 points.

Interesting isn’t it? Winning the club’s first title and scoring maximum goals in a season, a record that holds till date

3.That they beat Bray Unknowns 11 – 0

During the 1928-29 season, Shamrock humbled Bray Unknowns 11 – 0. The club that’s based in Bray managed to finish last of the 10 teams participating while conceding 58 goals! Shamrock finished 3rd 9 points behind then league winners Shelbourne.

Bray conceded almost 1/5th of all goals conceded that season in just 1 match!

4.That they are the most successful side in Ireland

They have won the FAI cups 24 times, the League of Ireland 17 times, the League of Ireland Shield 18 times, Leinster Senior Cup 19 times and League of Ireland Cup once.

Talk about winners!

5.That Paddy Ambrose is a club legend

Paddy Ambrose is a name that is known to every Shamrock Rovers fan. The Irish forward was with the club during his entire playing career and managed to net 109 goals in 16 seasons while making 211 appearances.

Legendary stuff!

6.That Ireland has got maximum players from Shamrock

They have won cups and Leagues but one of their finest achievements is that they have managed to provide the Republic of Ireland National Football Team with 62 players – A record that no Irish team has managed to even get close to.

Shamrock can easily be called as the side that sets standards.

7.That their stadium was demolished

Shamrock’s previous stadium, Glenmalure Park stadium was demolished in 1987. This vastly affected “the most successful side” in Ireland as they spent about 21 odd seasons without a home ground until they finally moved into their current stadium, the Tallaght Stadium.

They bounced back by winning the 2010 league title! What a club!

8.That the club is named after a street

The club which was formed over 100 year ago was named after the street where the second meeting of the club’s committee was held in the year 1901. The meeting was held in a private house on a street called “Shamrock Avenue.”

What a way remember the past!

9.That went 7 years without a loss in FAI cup?

They lost to Shelbourne in first round of FAI cup in the year 1970, their first defeat in 32 cup games which took place over the course of 7 years. 1970 was also the year that they missed out on winning the league on controversial circumstances.

Talk about habitual winners!

10.That they won 15 titles in the 1950’s?

The Club won 5 Leinster Senior Cups, 5 League of Ireland Shields, 2 FAI Cups and 3 League of Ireland titles. They averaged more than a trophy a season during that decade!

Impressive stuff!!
