In his first World Cup match ever in France’s opening game against Honduras, the 26 year old scored two official goals (the third, classified as an own goal is still seen by some as a Benzema effort). Hopefully, that is just the beginning for Real Madrid star whose immense contributions to his club could just continue towards the country. Benzema has played as a part of the French team for the UEFA European Football Championship in 2008 and 2012, but disciplinary issues created complications prevented him from playing in the 2010 World Cup despite his contributions in the qualifiers that took the team ahead in the first place.
Franck Ribery’s inability to participate in this World Cup due to massive injuries was expected to have a huge blow on the French team, but Benzema along with players such as Mathieu Valbena and Blaise Matuidi have worked hard to ensure that Ribery’s absence wouldn’t prove detrimental for Les Bleus.
Benzema has just played an important role in getting the Champion’s League trophy to his club Real Madrid and is not suffering from injuries, which put him in fine form to play against Switzerland. France doesn’t need more of their key players getting injured.
The forward is able to play both from the left and right wing, with higher goal accuracy from shorter distances. Hardly anything can prevent him from scoring once he has got the ball into the box. Benzema is not a selfish player but one who is able to work in sync with his team to enable better chances of scoring. He is not only able to identify opportunities to score but create them, proving him vital for France.
