This is one of the most iconic World Cup as it was trailblazer in many senses. It was first World Cup in North America and this was also Brazil’s first triumph since 1970.
The finals were played in Rose Bowl, California. Roberto Baggio led Italians took on Dunga’s spirited Brazilian side. The game was a nerve-wrenching contest. The game began with a boisterous atmosphere as the match was billed up as the contest between Brazil’s attack and Italy’s defence.
The game was a cagey affair for most of the 90 minutes as both the teams were content to play a waiting game. This was the first final in the history of World Cups to be a scoreless for the entire duration of 120 minutes, i.e. regulation time plus the extra time.
Finally a shootout was the only option left. Brazil prevailed with a slim 3-2 win over the Italians. The shootout is more famously remembered for Roberto Baggio’s ballooned kick over the crossbar as Italy lost their second final to Brazil, previously losing out to them in 1970.
