A 17 year old girl from Karachi did what not many could have imagine. Joyann Thomas has become the first Female Christian Footballer to play for the Pakistan Women's National Football Team. The selection committee was biased against including Christians in the national team but hard work, determination and will power helped the midfielder make it all the way to the national team.
The selection board was not all that the St. Joseph’s Convent High School student had to face, she received threatening messages which asked her to stop perusing her dream. However, the young midfielder was supported by her teammates who not only ensured her safety but also ensure that she felt at home with the national side.
Joyann's mother Joyce Christina faced a similar issue and had quit after similar circumstances. Her mother won the gold medal in a 1500m race event. However, she ensured that her daughter did not give up and has been a support system for the young prodigy.
Joyann, who is a part of the Pakistan National Women’s Football Team and Bochistan United, made her international debut over a year ago representing the Pakistani Christian Minority. The young player juggles between studies and football. Joyann's selection in the National Team of Pakistan is a shining example of how well football as a sport rewards perseverance and hard work.
Kudos Joyann!
