Today we are remembering the epic World Cup quarter-finals played in 2002 between this two footballing powerhouses.
England and Brazil both were in fine form in the tournament. The game had its moment of madness both by players and the referee. This is a match which is one of the best knockout matches.
Michael Owen’s opener
Micheal Owen gave the Englishmen a surprise lead in the 23rd minute. Lucio’s blunder gave England a shock lead as he failed to clear.
Emilie Heskey’s through ball which was enough for then Liverpool man to slot the ball into the back of the net. This goal gave England a hope, a hope of glory.
Rivaldo’s equalizer
Brazil showed why they were billed as the title favourites even before a ball was kicked in the tournament.
A moment of magic from Ronaldinho and Rivaldo’s sublime finish just brought Brazil back in the game. Ronaldinho’s dummy and that brilliant blind pass still gives every football fan goosebumps. Brazil clawed their way back into the match just at the stroke of halftime.
Ronaldinho Again!!
Gaucho sealed the deal for the Samba boys as he scored a stunning freekick from almost 35 yards out from the goal.
It was a bit lucky goal as the ball sailed over David Seamen’s head into the top left corner. Brazil looked in cruise control as they started to rip apart a stubborn English defense.
Oh why Gaucho?
A spook piece of refereeing gave England some hope as Ronaldinho was sent off for a soft foul on Mills. It looked more dangerous than it was and ref made a heavy weather of it. Surely it was mockery of refereeing but it surely brought life back into what was seemingly turning out to be a done and dusted tie.
England’s dream run ends
Finally they had to succumb to Brazil’s brilliance as the South Americans hung onto their lead despite going down to 10 men in 56th minute. The game had all the ingredients of a nerve wrecking football match and it surely turned out to be one!
