Mohun Bagan: The Champions Of India!
Bengal side Mohun Bagan clinch their first ever I league trophy as the team play out a cracker on the last day of the league. It was also the fourth national title for Bagan after having won the last in 2002 when the tournament was called the National Football League.
It all seemed over for the Green and Maroon brigade after Englishman John Johnson's header in the 41st minute as Bengaluru FC hadn't lost a game in their last twelve outings. With Bagan's poor away record all season long, gave the home team some comfort.
But with just four minutes left on the clock, Nigerian defender Bello Rasaq headed in to hold defending champions Bengaluru FC 1-1 at home and propel Mohun Bagan to its first I-League title.
With the stadium full, with home support in full voice, but it was the away fans who had the last laugh as Mohun Bagan fans celebrated their sides victory after 11 long years.Their supporters catching the action in Kolkata on giant screens and TV, erupted in joy. Wild celebrations went late into the night.
Amid incessant burst of fire crackers, hundreds of youngsters hit the streets on motorcycles chanting the names of their heroes and indulging in merrymaking.
Donning the green and maroon jerseys, hundreds of people hit the streets throwing gulal at each other and distributing sweets.
Even the West Bengal chief minister got into the act on Twitter: "After 11 years the Football I-League trophy comes back to Bengal. Congratulations Mohun Bagan."
