Gabriel Fernandez or Gabi the current Atletico Madrid captain, who lead his side to La Liga title last season has admitted of playing part in his former side match fixing scandal.
Gabi who captained the Real Zaragoza side, who are under investigation from the Spanish FA for bribing their opponents to avoid relegation. The match fixing scandal specifically points out the last game of the season where, Zaragoza needed a win to avoid a drop. And they did so by winning the game by a one goal margin (2-1) with both the goals coming from captain Gabi. One of them being a 30 yard strike.
With the win Zaragoza avoided the drop, and instead of them Deportivo La Coruña finished in the relegation last place. Investigations have revealed that after the game, 12 Zaragoza players received 120,000 euros in their bank accounts. And they paid their Levante rivals in cash for throwing the match away.
A report in El Mundo Deportivo said, Gabi had admitted of being a part in the conspiracy, with the Atletico captain being quoted saying:
"What the club asked me"
Gabi who was a significant figure in the Zaragoza dressing room, had a terrfic season that year, which earned him a move to current side Atletico Madrid.
Needs to be seen, what action the Spanish FA decide to take against and whether the action or punishment will on only be imposed on the club only or even the player will face the consequence of the being part of the match fixing scandal.
