Atletico Madrid pipped their illustrious neighbors at Vinente Calderon 2-0 to gain an upper hand in the two legged Copa Del Rey round of 16 tie. This is Real’s third straight defeat after going unbeaten in 22 games prior to that.
The RojiBlancos outclassed Real Madrid in all departments as Ancelotti’s expensively assembled side couldn't break a resolute defense. The intensity displayed by the hosts was too overpowering for Galacticos.
Atleti took lead in 58th minute via a penalty as Sergio Ramos’ moment of madness just gave Diego Simeone’s boys an advantage to build upon. Raul Garcia converted the spot kick and then the hosts played even more aggressively. Real Madrid after bright start failed to build any sort of momentum as their midfield failed to create anything whatsoever.
Soon, the hosts doubled their lead as the 19 year old defender Jose Gimenez towered above everyone to head home from a Gabi corner. But in the midst of all his one thing took center stage. It was the homecoming of their former hero, the 45,000 fans in the Calderon roared as Fernando Torres made his debut for Atletico.
Although he failed to score but the Spaniard had a decent game and was cheered by the fans throughout his stay on the pitch.
The second leg will be played at Santiago Bernabeu next Thursday where the Los Blancos will look to overturn this two goal lead to progress into the quarters.
