Bayern Munich star striker agreed for a 4-year deal with Spanish Champions Atletico Madrid for an undisclosed fee in an attempt to replace their former striker Diego Costa who successfully moved to Premier League club Chelsea.
The Croatian international was unhappy with the way he was used by coach Pep Guardiola and had made requested that he be let go to Bayern Munich chairman Karl Heinze Rummenigge.
He will now hope to productively replace Diego Costa, the instrumental man in Atletico’s eye-gouging performance this season.
The Croatian has scored 33 goals in 54 matches for Bayern Munich since his move from Vfl Wolfsbrg. He had scored 18 goals in Bundesliga last season just two behind top scorer Lewandowski who will now take the player’s position in front of the goal.
The 28-year-old’s new club released a new statement confirming the transfer which read as follows: “Atlético Madrid and Bayern Munich have reached an agreement for the transfer of Mario Mandzukic.
“The Croatian striker successfully underwent the medical examination in Madrid before signing a contract for four years with our club.”
Whether he can fit into the void left by Diego Costa’s departure remains to be seen.
