Daniel Sturridge Pours His Heart Out
In the recent interview with BT Sports the Liverpool striker poured his heart out as he discussed from Ronaldo to Anelka to Inzaghi and how they helped him to attain and modify his game.
Sturridge:
"I’ve got DVDs of Ronaldo, of Henry, of you, Fowler, Bergkamp....
the list goes on, Ruud van Nistelrooy. So many different players, I
still watch the clips, still watch the moves.
"I remember when I was at Chelsea and (Carlo) Ancelotti used to
say ‘watch a DVD of Inzaghi’ – movement in terms of runs in
behind and what makes strikers score goals.
"I used to like to come short and play passes and be more
involved in the game, but as time goes on you realise playing on
the shoulder does create opportunities, not just for yourself but
for your team-mates too.
"Inzaghi was one that I really liked to watch, because he was
completely different to how I played.
"But he gave me something I didn’t have and actually helped me
out a lot and probably a lot of the goals I score now have come
from him."
However, the former Manchester City frontman reckons it was his
loan spell at Bolton two years earlier - where he fired eight goals
in 12 games - that kick-started his career.
He said: "I’m grateful to Owen Coyle. I’m still indebted to the
club and to Owen for everything he has done for me in my career.
I still text him to this day and keep in touch - and the players as
well.
"Being able to play week in, week out and being able to express
myself. But again playing for Chelsea and learning new things,
learning movement, training with guys like world class strikers
(Nicolas) Anelka and Didier (Drogba).
"Anelka was my idol when I was a kid growing up, I always used
to love watching him play. To watch them close up and to play
with them was a great honour for myself.
"At Man City, growing up with the likes of (Shaun) Wright-
Phillips and seeing him and Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha,
Stephen Ireland, all them guys helped me become who I am
today and I’m grateful to the academy system.
"They all helped in my career, so I’m always thankful to them for
what they've done."
