Ever since Qatar have won the bid to host 2022 World Cup there have been murmurs in the global footballing fraternity about something fishy. After all against all the odds, they shrugged off a strong English bid led by luminaries like Lord Triesman, the former FA chairman and David Beckham.
These murmurs led to a full fledged secret investigation by FIFA. The investigation report has been submitted but it hasn't been disclosed as yet. This has forced British MP Damian Collins to call The Serious Frauds Office to make the report public. He alleges FIFA of hiding the truth regarding the corruption in the Qatar bid from everyone, and that they plan to “bury it”.
He was quoted by The Daily Telegraph,
“I intend to write to the Attorney General to ask whether he could request a copy of the report. The report covers the whole of the World Cup bidding
process so we should be able to see it to determine whether it shows any wrong doing that falls within the jurisdiction of the serious fraud
office,” he said.
Mr Collins said burying the report would be a “complete sham” and was “totally unacceptable”.
He also asked the English FA and all the other FIFA affiliated members to boycott the governing body due to lack of transparency in the organization.
“We should be prepared to do that and other countries should be prepared to do that,” he said.
“At the end of the day, all Fifa cares about is money. If Fifa is prepared to bury this report then it shows they will never be serious about reform and cleaning up the game.”
