Flashback Friday – Diego Maradona
He is one of the all-time greats of the game, without a shadow of the doubt. Diego Maradona in his career has seen it all from the pinnacle of glory to the annals of the fall from grace. He was a true maverick of the game who still enjoys fan following akin to current superstars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Maradona started his career at his boyhood club Argentinos Juniors where he played for five years and carved out a strong reputation for himself.
There a relatively raw and unknown talent was unearthed post the debacle of Argentina in 1978 World Cup at home. After successful stint at Juniors, he made his big move to Boca Juniors. There he shone like a superstar as he thrilling season led him to the Spanish giants Barcelona within a season at Boca.
The move to Europe was difficult for the Argentine legend but he rose to the challenge in his style. The mid 80’s was the golden period of his career. He led his country to the ultimate prize in world football when he single handedly led them to World Cup win against a mighty West Germany side which was in the news for his famous Hand of God goal against England in the semis. Along with this he had brilliant spell at Napoli where he led them to two Serie A titles.
While he was having success on professional front but his personal life was marred by various difficulties. His unabated cocaine abuse and his other drug related problems led him to disciplinary muddles.
After tasting glory in the 80’s he saw his fall in the 90’s. From superstardom he was reduced to a player who failed a dope test. His infamous return from 1994 World Cup is well documented. The last decade of 20th century was by far the worst phase of Maradona’s career.
He then ventured into management but was unable to recreate magic of his playing days as he led Argentina to 2010 World Cup quarterfinals. But the difference in contractual issues led to his ouster from the managerial seat. He also managed various clubs in short stint at UAE club Al Wasl.
