Danish legend Michael Laudrup admitted in an interview in 2013 that he was on the brink of signing for the Merseyside club. He joined Juventus instead in 1983 from his youth club Brondby.
Speaking to Liverpool Echo he revealed that he was a boyhood Liverpool fan and was very excited to join them.
“Liverpool were my team as a kid,” Laudrup said. “I watched them as a kid on television back home in Denmark."
He was fan of the famed Anfield roar, which made the atmosphere at the venue mind boggling. But he rued the missed chance of joining them due to ban imposed on English clubs from playing in European competition due to Heysel disaster.
“I loved the team, the atmosphere. But I never got the chance to play there, partly because Liverpool were banned from Europe for a long time after Heysel.
“It’s a fantastic ground with a great crowd always.”
There were reports that the move collapsed due to Liverpool's insistence on having a long contract. Liverpool had agreed a three year deal with Laudrup but the Merseyside club wanted to have a four year deal which led to the breakdown in talks and ultimately led to the collapse of the transfer.
Laudrup went onto enjoy a trophy laden career at Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid. He also had a fruitful international career as he won Euro 92 with an underdog Danish team. Despite all this, somewhere down the line he still misses his Anfield dream which was left unfulfilled.
