La Liga Review 2014

2014 has been a year of surprise in La Liga as for the first time in over 18 years Real Madrid-Barcelona duopoly had been broken. Real’s less illustrious neighbours finally got their hands on the Liga trophy as they pipped Barcelona for the title on the final day of the season with a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou.

It has been a year of Madrid clubs in Spain as Atletico dominated the first half of the year while Real wrestled back the lead from their arch rivals Barca who made an unbeaten start to the campaign but lost their plot by the end of the year.

This year saw the rise of traditional mid table clubs like Sevilla, Villereal and Peter Lim’s Valencia. Valencia have especially been a revelation this year with a splendid second half of the calendar year. They decimated defending champions Atletico Madrid to announce their arrival in Premiera Division.

Currently Real Madrid look unstoppable as they sit atop the league standings but the season is long and it remains to be seen if Los Blancos can retain this tempo till the end of the season, which is highly unlikely. The year may have ended but the season has just begun! So its time to wait and watch.
