As the American football legend Landon Donovan prepares to hang his boots up, he's relishing the chance to play against Theirry Henry for possibly one last time. But he is hopeful of facing the French legend at the end of season's MLS finale, which is scheduled to take place in December.
Donovan was full of praises for Henry, as he saluted him for his incredible overall career. But was also quoted saying, on field there will be no room for admiration. but off field he will always respect the former arsenal man.
“I think sometimes we forget how special his career's been,” - Donovan said ahead of Sunday's showdown. “When you're caught up in the moment and you're caught up in the next game, you just see him as an opponent that you're trying to figure out and stop, but when you think about it historically, it's pretty special that we get a chance to play against him.
“I'm certainly not in awe of him [while we're] playing, but when you step back before or after the game and look at what he's done, it's pretty amazing. It's special that we get to play against him.”
Donovan who decided to retire from National team duties, as he was dropped by the National team coach stating he wasn't fit enough, has just 4 games at the most before he retires from the game which he has been playing for the past fifteen years. Donovan who along with Dempsey who have represented US NT at the international stage, would be an end of an era as USA prepare to bring in a new set of youngsters to the world stage.
Both Legends had a word of praise for each other,
Henry on Donovan: “When you think about the MLS and when you think about U.S. soccer, you think about Landon Donovan,” “The amount of games he’s played for the national team, the amount of goals, what he represents for [Americans] is a symbol” Donovan on Henry: “I think he's meant a lot to French football, he meant a lot to Arsenal, and he's meant a lot to the Red Bull,” “He's brought them back to prominence after a long time of not-being really prominent on the national scope. It's been impressive what they've done there with him, and I'm going to try to enjoy the last encounter.”
