Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Blind, Carrick, Rooney, Mata, Di Maria, van Persie
Southampton: Forster, Clyne, Fonte, Alderweireld, Bertrand, Wanyama, Schneiderlin, S. Davis, Ward-Prowse, Elia, Pellè.
Ronald Koeman got his revenge against his former mentor Louis van Gaal as his Southampton side pipped United 1-0 at Old Trafford. The win sees Saints leapfrog Manchester united to third place.
The game was a cagey affair as both the teams were defensively solid. Saints had the better of the chances as they made the better use of the possession than their opponents. United saw return of Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria to the starting line up while Both Clyne and Elia got into the starting lineup for the visitors.
The hosts were lacklustre in front of the goal as the expensive frontline comprising of Wayne Rooney, Van Persie, Di Maria and Juan Mata failed to register a single shot on goal. Fraiser Forster was hardly troubled by this attack speaks volumes about the terrible performance by Van Gaal’s star studded frontline.
Saints finally broke the deadlock in 69th minute as Dusan Tadic scored a well deserved goal for the vistors. Graziano Pelle’s strike cannoned off the post to fall right at the Serbian’s feet, who made no mistake in slotting the ball into the back of the net.
United enjoyed swathes of possession but failed to break down the organized Saints defense, who pressed vigorously to pressurize a feeble United midfield and attack.
