Chelsea continues to carry on their reign as they managed to edge past their Portuguese opponents with a 0-1 win thanks to a Nemanja Matic header.
Chelsea, as expected, was the dominant of the two sides as they were rarely troubled by the home side. The Blues had tons of chances to get into the lead but were denied either by Sporting stopper Rui Patricio or some wasteful finishing.
Finally, Chelsea got their deserved lead via a towering header from 6’5” Serbian, Nemanja Matic. Matic is no stranger to Lisbon and especially Sporting fans as not so long ago he used to play for their fierce cross town rivals Benfica.
The second half was a photocopy of the first with amplifications in the wastefulness of the Chelsea forwards and the number of saves made by Patricio. Andre Schurrle had a couple of glorious chances but he somehow managed to not hit the back of the net.
Diego Costa, who is in scintillating form, got rubbed by the wastefulness of his teammates as he too missed quite few chances. It was Chelsea’s lacklustre finishing that kept Sporting in the game rather than some dogged defending.
Sporting’s attack was barely seen in the match as they were completely outclassed in all the three departments by Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.
