The Xmas bells are tolling as all the major leagues except Premier League head into winter break as the festive season is beginning from today. Today we’ll analyze the top flight of German football, Bundesliga.
This has been a bastion of Bayern Munich over the years, with clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg winning an odd league or two. This year is no different than other with Bavarians leading the charts with 45 points from 17 games and lead the Bundesliga into Christmas break with a comfortable 9 point lead over this season’s surprise package Wolfsburg.
The gap between Bayern and the rest of the league is as wide as the Grand Canyon both in the terms of points and the quality. Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund did offer some resistence to this Munich juggernaut by winning two back to back league titles between 2010-2012 but sadly, they too have been decimated by Bayern’s Galectico approach this season.
The Ruhr side is languishing at 17th place in a 18 team league and are favourite for relegation instead of title. The Liga is in news for Dortmund’s dramatic fall from grace instead of Bayern’s domination. BvB’s downfall is largeky down to their own failings and Pep Guardiola’s can’t be blamed this season.
Freddie Röckenhaus, of Süddeutsche Zeitung, has summed Dortmund’s ailment in this lines.
“Dortmund don’t seem to be able to cut open teams with a surgical knife, unlike other top teams. At times, one feels that BVB are caught up in eternal adolescence and power-sapping exuberance, and that a more grown-up football style is not even wanted”.
With Dortmund lost in dilemma of ideologies and God knows what, it is pretty clear that Bayern Munich will head to their record 25th Bundesliga title and may do an ‘Invincibles’ this season as they’re yet to be defeated in the league. And for Dortmund, only time will tell whether they are playing relegation playoffs or the European ones.
