Nidhin Lal’s heroics and Josimar’s lethal finish save the day for hosts as they comeback from behind salvage a point against defending champions Bengaluru FC at Cooperage.
Bengaluru came into the tie on theback of their maiden win in AFC Cup and were tipped as favourites to topple high flying hosts in their own den. They began the game on a bright note as they tested Mumbai’s defense every now and then. Mumbai held firm but their resistance was short lived.
Bengaluru’s in-form striker Eugenson Lyngdoh finally managed to break the deadlock as he hit a swerving shot in the top corner after being brilliantly set up Sean Rooney. This 31st minute magical strike just paid dividends for their efforts.
The goal spurred Mumbai into action as they started to attack with more urgency and finesse. The hosts ended the half on a high after nearly equalizing via Rafi.
Mumbai continued to attack the Blues’ goal and their efforts paid off as Josimar’s bullet header threw the game right into the balance. From then on, it was top gear for Bengaluru and the game was more open and exciting till the end.
Mumbai were saved from the defeat by Nidhin Lal’s excellent shot stopping as he single handedly kept Sunil Chettri and Co. at bay. His save in the 93rd minute was probably the save of the game as Sean Rooney’s header was clearly goal bound.
The draw gives Mumbai a good chance to finish in the top four.
