Seasoned Siddique nets Union Bank winner
Mumbai, April 20: Union Bank of India toiled hard to eke out a narrow 1-0 win against a fighting Dena Bank in an Elite Division match of the MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) League – 2014-15, played at the Cooperage ground, on Monday morning. Old warhorse Khalid Siddique netted the all-important winning goal for Union Bank in the second half.
In another match, Melwin Vaz and Egypsio scored a brace each as Central Bank of India romped to a comfortable 5-1 win against Central Railway. Andrew Buthello netted the other goal for the winners, while Prabash Janardhan netted the lone goal for the railwaymen.
Meanwhile, the match between the Union Bank and Dena Bank was more or less evenly matched as both the teams came up some steady build up to attacks but their strikers lacked the finishing.
After a barren first half, the veteran midfielder Siddique capitalized on a gilt-edged opportunity in the 56th minute to stab in the only goal of the match which secured the second win on the trot for Union Bank and the full three points.
The young Dena Bank outfit put up a solid fight back and tried to penetrate deep into the rival territory in search of the equaliser, which, however proved elusive and they had to finish on the losing side.
The next round of Elite Division matches will be played on Thursday, April 23.
