Shakhtar’s - Donbass Arena suffers bomb damage
Two explosions were reported on the morning of 23th August in the Donbass Arena, which is home to Ukrainian professional football club Shakhtar Donetsk. The club confirmed the incident. No-one was injured in the blasts, which happened at 04:00 BST, and the only damage being scathed communication equipment.
In an official statement released by the Press Office, it was stated: “On 23 August, at 6:00, two powerful explosions occurred at Donbass Arena. As a result of shelling, there are numerous damages of the north western facade of the stadium, communications, equipment and detached building of the energy center, which is located in the northern part of the Donbass Arena Park.”
“There are no casualties among the stadium staff.”
The Ukrainian team has left the city due to the conflict and is now based in the western city of Lviv. Six Shakhtar players have already refused to return to Ukraine due to the political situation: Douglas Costa, Alex Teixeira, Fred, Ismaily, Dentinho and Facundo Ferreyra.
Surprisingly, some media representatives had reported that during the ongoing combat operations in Ukraine, the Donbass Arena was bombed two days ago. Yet the stadium authorities failed to take any major precaution against it.
Terrorism seems to have ventured in the world of football as well.
