Premier League yesterday announced its record-breaking deal for broadcasting it’s matches for a whopping £5.14bn. This is the highest amount ever paid for broadcasting rights of any football league in the world.
Premier League Chairman David Scudamore said that the deal is befitting to the stature of the best league in the world.
Scudamore said: "We're not set up for charitable purposes. We are set up to be the best football competition."
He added that Premier League is UK's identity and it has given immense popularity to the nation.
Scudamore said: "I believe the Premier League is a great UK export and it attracts a whole lot of positive feelings about the UK.
"If you go and do any international survey, things like the Premier League, the BBC, the Queen: they are things that people feel are good about the UK."
The deal will give each club around £100 mn in broadcasting rights alone. That's more than what even Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich get. The championship winner will get around £156 mn in prize money.
Premier League has emphasized that the clubs will use this money in development of stadiums and in enhancing the quality of football facilities. This will help in development of football at the grassroots.
According to Scudamore, this will enable the clubs to showcase “the best football they can”.
