The Curious Case of Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney is one guy who never ever ceases to stay away from the spotlight. The Manchester United captain was again subject to media furor post his shocking red card against West Ham united at Old Trafford.
It is no secret that Rooney has had a reputation of being a hot-head since his teenage days. He has paid the prize of his temper time and again, as his departure cost his teams their matches. England fans will never ever forget that epic night at 2006 World Cup where Cristiano Ronaldo capitalized on his then teammate’s fiery nature.
But if recent history is anything to go by, then the England captain hasn’t been sent off for his club side since 2009. It was also admitted by the man himself that he has somewhat mellowed with age.
Somehow he still experiences that moment of madness time and again. Now, it is ever more important as he is no longer that immensely talented young lad but a captain of both Manchester United and England.
He drew sharp reactions from his British media and fans alike. Phil Neville, his former coach and colleague was aghast by his challenge.
"When Rooney made the foul I thought United must have been in trouble at the back but United were four against two and all the defenders were in good positions. It was just a reckless tackle. There's no need to make the foul because of the position the United defenders were in."
Some fans were furious as they showed their dissent for their captain via Twitter,
“Awful conduct from Wayne Rooney. The Man Utd and England captain should know better than that!”
“Just when you thought Wayne Rooney had grown up he does that. A toddler throwing his toys out of the pram. Should not be captain.”
It looks like the feistiness is part of his DNA and people will have to come grips with it and be prepared for an odd moment of madness.
