After a gloomy season staying out of the top 4 in the Premier League and having to let go of Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement David Moyes, United look to bounce back this season. The transfer window is buzzing with rumors about United’s probable targets. New manager Van Gaal will seem to want to bring in his style of players to shape a new squad that can once again challenge for the title. Let’s take a look at the top targets for the Red Devils.
Arturo Vidal:
The Chilean international, who has developed as a box to box player for Juventus, shows good speed, durability and tackling ability. Scoring 11 goals in the Serie A last season, the 27 year old is a good buy for any club. United need a revamp of their midfield which has shown poor sonsistency in possession and creativity. Vidal will no doubt spark the dynamics required in the midfield to make that final difference over opponents and will also contribute with goals, something United can do with, after their year before lasts over dependence on Van Persie failed. At £ 34 Million, he will not be a cheap buy.
Angel Di Maria:
Liverpool used a tactic of outscoring their opponents last season. They were weak at the back, but simply put more goals in the opponents net than they conceded. If Di Maria, at about £ 30 Million, joins United this season, they could possibly replicate that. With Rooney, Mata, Janujaz, Van Persie, Kagawa and Welbeck, they will have an additional attacking player in their squad. Di Maria however, is no ordinary player, and one of these names will have to vacate a starting 11 position for the Argentine. His speed, skill and creativity helped Real win the Champion’s League and his absence in the International squad for the last two matches saw Argentina struggle in the World Cup. However, with other big names in the squad already, this move might lead to some unrest in the dressing room, with egos possibly being hurt – much like Manchester City a couple of seasons back. Van Gaal however, being an experienced manager could get things in order.
Mats Hummels:
United need to plug the leaks in their defense on priority. If they aim to be the balanced team they were a few seasons ago, the 25 year old German would be a long term asset for them. Playing for Dortmund currently, he would be open for a switch to the Premier League and would have a guaranteed starting position in the United squad. This move might bolster them at the back and give players like Vidal (if he comes in) more confidence to go ahead. At a market value of around £ 30 Million, he would be an expensive centre back.
With the new £ 750 Million Adidas deal coming in, United can afford to spend this £ 100 Million or so and still be under the radar from the Financial Fair Play. They will definitely be looking to challenge for the title again and these 3 buys, plus the fact that they have lesser games this season, could just about see them through.
