The spirit of Istanbul still resonates at Anfield each and every time Liverpool step on the field. The days when European nights were a norm and not a feature are still etched in everyone’s memory.
Post 2007 finals, Liverpool has just vanished from the elite club completion in Europe. After Rafa Benitez’s sacking, Liverpool have struggled big time in Europe under all the managers. But what has made the Europe’s aristocracy relegated to just bygones just inside a decade?
Liverpool’s demise began in 2006 when Liverpool’s hierarchy struggled to replace their ageing stars along with losing out their best players to other clubs across the Europe. The stability in the squad just went kaput.
If this was not enough, the managerial merry-go-round at Anfield made the matters worse. Four managers in last 8 years have done little good. The squads were rebuilt far too many times which led to utter chaos.
Along with that shambles of a transfer policy was another nail in the coffin. Spending over 200 million and still the squad lacks an absolute match winner. Luis Suarez being an exception. But he too left Anfield to further his career.
Liverpool needs a structural overhaul and a definite plan if they want to get back in Europe as an elite club. Brendan Rodgers may have brought Champions League back at Anfield but the squad seems far from being Champions League regulars.
