Wayne Rooney’s late goal sealed the deal for Louis van Gaal’s side an inspiring victory after Arsenal’s domination came to a cropper against David de Gea led United defense.
Arsenal dominated large portions of the game as they created more and better chances of the two sides. Tons of injury in defense meant Van Gaal reverted to his 3 man defense as Smaaling, McNair and Blackett played in a 3-5-2 formation.
United preferred to play on counter as Arsenal continued to hog majority of ball and created more chances. David de Gea’s inspirational keeping kept United in the game as he made many crucial saves to deny Arsenal.
Finally United gained a shock lead against the run of play with a Kieran Gibbs own goal which led to injury of Arsenal keeper Szczesny. Antonio Valencia’s drilled cross deflected via Gibbs into an open net. Manchester United too had an injury as Luke Shaw limped off the pitch in 16th minute with United seeing the return of Ashley Young.
Later in the game, Wayne Rooney doubled United’s lead after a superb counterattack killed the game. Arsenal finally managed to score a consolation goal via Olivier Giroud deep into stoppage time to make an interesting end to the game.
Arsenal dropped into 8th place with this defeat whereas United rose to 4th place in the league table.
