French international and former Arsenal legend landed at the Mumbai airport on Monday night. The Arsenal legend has signed with the Goa side which will be coached by another legend, Zico.
Pires was signed by club Goa as their Marquee signing as the winger came out of retirement for the Indian Super League.
Pires expressed his delight through his twitter account: Didn't know I had so many fans in India!!! @FCGoaOfficial
The grand unveiling of Pires:
The unveiling was done at a hotel in Mumbai with co-owner Cricketer - Virat Kholi present alongside Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan. The two youngsters were evidently excited as the clubs Marquee player Robert Pires and coach Zico Arthur were unveiled to the press.
Kohli said he was involved with the franchise during the player’s draft, figuring out which players to pick for the squad.
“I was pretty much in touch with FC Goa, figuring out whom to pick. We have a pretty strong side. Average age of the side is 28. The Indian players have been playing together in the I-League, the co-ordination is there, the commitment is there."
Kohli on coach Zico:
"It makes a big difference to the players. As a sports person you need to feed off someone with such experience. If the coach can make you feel confident and good about your ability, that's all you need at the end of the day."
Here's what Pires had to say:
"Thank you very much for the welcome at Mumbai airport. It was amazing. I'm happy to be here in India finally. Thank you very much to the ISL and FC Goa for choosing me. I'm glad to play for my team. I'm here to win. I'm a professional, I'm not here as a tourist. India is a good country, the food is spicy but I'm here for football."
