Arsene, Jose and The Shield
Arsene Wenger led Arsenal defeated Jose Mourinho led Chelsea for the first time in 14 attempts, securing the Community Shield successfully. In the last 14 attempts, Chelsea had won 7, lost one whereas 6 matches ended with equal scorelines. Wenger has defeated a lot of managers in his time but was unable to beat the Portuguese, which he did manage to do and in style as he won the Community shield as well.
Arsene Wenger is a firm believer of making his team play “beautiful and attractive” football whereas, Jose Mourinho is all about getting the job done in every which way possible. Where Wenger has the invincible under his belt, Mourinho has a plethora of trophies, Wenger believes in fast attacking game-play laced with small yet defence splitting accurate passes and Mourinho believes that attacking well is not the only way to win and his team’s stellar defensive records have proven the same. The rivalry between the two is well known and goes back to 2004-05 season.
"Wenger has a real problem with us and I think he is what you call in England a voyeur. He is someone who likes to watch other people. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea."
Mourinho on Wenger
Wenger on Mourinho
Chelsea under the Portuguese managed to score 21 goals in these 14 appearances whereas the gunner managed to score just 7 goals under the Frenchman. Wenger has stayed in London for almost 2 decades and has managed over 1050 games as Arsenal’s manager, with a win record of a little over 54%. Mourinho on the other hand, has managed multiple clubs and has a cumulative win percent of about 67%. The rivalry between the two came to stage last season where the linesman had to break a fight between the “specialist in failure” (Mourinho called Wenger that in an interview a few seasons ago) and the “special one” (Mourinho termed himself that almost a decade ago). The rivalry which has lasted over a decade has produced some entertaining banter and is sure to last longer but, on the pitch, Mourinho has been the clear winner.
