Football banter amongst fans of the two Manchester clubs took an ugly turn as it claimed the life of a Manchester United fan. Mike Carter, 49 lost his life after being punched by a couple of hooligans after a quarrel.

Mike went over to a restaurant to get some take away for the night. He was walking alone around King Street West at around 3.10 am where he got into a row with two guys, which was focused around rivalry between City-United. But things got worse and the duo assaulted Mike leading to his death.

The two men have been identified by those present while the incident took place. One of them was white, 6ft
tall and of a slim build while the other one was Asian, 5ft 7in tall of a medium build and had black hair.

Investigations are on going at the moment. The officer in charge gave a statement which read as follows,

“First and foremost I would like to extend my condolences to this man’s family at what is clearly a very traumatic and difficult time for them.

“Our investigation is focused on establishing exactly what happened during the early hours of Sunday 31 August and exactly how this man came to sustain what are now fatal injuries.

“I do not want to speculate on what happened and that is why it is so important we speak to anyone who was present at the location during this incident and witnessed what went on.”
