FC Basel have got some special connection with English clubs. They always find themselves at the top of their game whenever they face any team from the Queen’s land. This has been observed through some startling results over last couple of seasons.
The Swiss champions eliminated Liverpool from Champions League with a 1-1 draw at Anfield. This is not the first time when they’ve killed an English dream. They eliminated Chelsea from group stages of the competition by doing a double over them in 2012. Along with them, they also sent North London side Tottenham Hotspurs in Europa League last season.
It seems that Basel have got some kind of special burst of energy when they face English clubs. Here’s what their manager has to say about this weird streak, Paulo Sousa, said after the draw at Anfield:
"For me and my staff, and especially the players, it's about creating more history for this great club. It means we are moving in the right direction to achieve important things.
"As a club, it gives us an opportunity to challenge the best teams. This is where we want to be and competing like we did today, in these sorts of environments with our fantastic fans, who believed in what we were doing.
"Our game plan was perfect. Coming here to Anfield and showing the personality in our game ... I'm more proud of my team for the way they expressed themselves, the intensity they showed on the pitch, their belief and ability to make the right decisions."
So now we know the secret, don’t we?
