"This was my lowest point," he said.
The 35 year old was Professional Footballers’ Association’s chairman from 2010-2013 and is still a part of the management. Carlisle is a distinguished name in English football having represented nine clubs and making over 500 appearances in a career spanning over 16 years.
He said he had reached "an epiphany" that he is "incredibly unwell".
He described his ordeal which is nerve wrecking but a tale of fightback nonetheless. He is the first professional footballer to appear on a TV show and openly speak about his depression. He also appeared in a documentary by BBC which was based on suicides and depression in professional football.
"I ventured out of my room not as Clarke the ex-footballer, but as Clarke, a mental health patient," he said.
"That was the first step in my road to recovery."
In the interview, he said his wife Gemma had seen a "steady decline" since he left Burnley in 2012.
"I missed a sense of belonging, a sense of worth and value in life," he said.
He said he is again enjoying with fame of his yesteryear is still stuck with him as he is recognized in the neighbourhood.
"You see someone in the street and they'd say, 'didn't you used to be Clarke Carlisle?' I laughed the first few off but after a while it eats at your core."
