One is a revolutionary while other is a warrior. Both of them are as different as chalk and cheese, yet they have something in common. Johan Cryuff and Cristiano Ronaldo, two of the best players ever to grace the game.
We will draw some parallels between these two iconic players.
1. Ego – Both the players apart from their footballing antics are known to have a huge ego. Surely not to be played in the same team.
2. Versatility – Cryuff was known for his versatility as he was the flag-bearer of the ‘Total Football’ philosophy. Ronaldo too, is versatile enough to play anywhere in the front three.
3. Three Ballon d’Or awards – Cryuff was at his peak in the 70’s and this was evidently recognized as he won three Ballon d’Or awards in four years from 1971-1974. And Cristiano, too joined this elite club by winning his third Ballon yesterday.
4. Winners of European Golden Shoe – Both the players have won this prestigious award. Ronaldo has won it thrice while Cryuff has won it once.
5. Lack of international success – Netherlands and Holland both are known for underachieving despite producing world class talents for generations. Despite Cryuff and Ronaldo representing them, both the icons have somehow failed to propel their teams to glory. Ronaldo still has some time on his side to erase this dubious record.
